Profiles International has developed an innovative assessment tool to assist incoming college students with selecting courses and majors that support their unique abilities and interests.

This assessment tool, Academic Coach, will identify strengths or areas of improvement to prepare students for graduation and satisfying careers. When students graduate from college today, they must be prepared for the highly-skilled, competitive marketplace.

The goal of the Academic Coach assessment is to provide students with a review of their learning style, career interests and behavioral traits. This information will assist them with the selection of the core curriculum and courses to support a degree program and career selection.

The numerical ability, numerical reasoning, verbal skill, verbal reasoning and overall learning index results are shared with each student. The assessment profile shows how efficiently a student assimilates and utilizes various forms of information.

The career interests portion measures scales, such as creative, people service and technical as it relates to various occupations. Measured behavioral traits will help students select careers that best fit their strengths and interests, such as assertiveness, objective judgement and sociability.

These tools will be reviewed during orientation sessions as well as throughout students’ college experience.

A review of behavioral traits assists students with the selection of extra-curricular activities best suited for their individual traits.

Academic Coach provides coaching and mentoring tools for advisors in the First-Year Experience. By using these tools, advisors can help students make the right choices for their educational degree program, as well as expose them to careers that are best suited for their talents, strengths and interests.

The program at Sam Houston State University is being utilized throughout the campus.

Heather Crowson, Ed.D., has established goals to increase retention and graduation of students within four to six years.

A link with the O*NET (Occupational Information Network from the US Department of Labor) is provided so students can review colleges and occupation matches. Additionally, surveys and questionnaires are available to assist students in making decisions about their college education program.
